The Atom
Document Questions/Purpose:
  • Name the particles inside the atom, their charges, and their location.
  • Which particle inside of an atom helps identify the element?
  • What is an isotope?
You will need to use your textbook to finish this document (pg. 311 - 317)

Define:

  • Atom:the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still retain all of the properties of that element.

Part 1: The Structure of an Atom:
  • Draw a diagram of what an atom looks like (use pg. 312) as a guide
    • label all the parts
    • Write a description of each labeled part

Part 2: Building an Element:
  • Which particle inside the atom helps you identify the element?  What's another name for this particle?
The number of protons.
  • What is the charge of an atom by itself, neutral, positive, or negative?  What about it's structure (the way it is built) that makes it that charge?
neutral. The nuetrons and protons make it change.
  • Complete the table
Element

Carbon

Chlorine
17 17
Silver

Potassium
19 19

  • Isotopes: (define it, then come up with 3 statements about isotopes)
  • Write the definition here: An Isotopes is an atom with the same amount of protons but with a DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF neutrons.
    • Statement 1: all isotopes are the same element because they have the same amount of protons.
    • Statement 2: Some isotopes are unstable and can change their nucleas.
    • Statement 3: Isotopes are generally of the same element but are larger.

  • Identifying Isotopes:
    • How can you identify each isotope of an element? What is a mass number?By looking at it's mass # which is the sum of the protons and neutrons

  • Using the drawings from figure 15 on page 315 as a guide, you will be:
    1. Drawing isotopes of different elements (make sure to color code protons, neutrons, and electrons)
    2. Calculate the mass number
    3. Identify the number of electrons inside the atom if the atom is neutral (no charge)

Partner 2 Summary
In this lab we looked at physics/science book to read the information about atoms and isotopes . I read about how an atom contains neutrons , protons and electrons . and an Isotope is an atom that that has the same amount of protons like a regular atom but it has different amount of neutrons. In this lab we focused on atoms. We looked at all the different parts of an atom and there importance.  We also looked through the science textbook to learn about isotopes.  Atoms contain, neutrons, protons, and electrons and isotopes has a different amount of neutrons.

Partner 4 Summary
During this project we looked through the physics book to find out about atoms and isotopes. An atom contains protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons help determine the element of an atom. An isotope is an atom that have the same amount of protons as another atom but it has a different amount of neutrons.
